Arms

Arms - After massive weight loss some patients have a lot of loose skin and extra fat hanging from their arms. This condition is sometimes referred to as”bat wings”. Hanging skin on the arms can be an embarrassing problem forcing people to wear long sleeve shirts. Fortunately, there are surgical options to correct this unattractive physical condition. The plastic surgery options are based on the patient’s anatomy and the degree of skin laxity. If a patient has mild to no lax skin on the arms they may benefit from a liposuction procedure to remove only remaining fat. However, in most cases there is excess hanging skin under the arms as well as residual fat. The plastic surgery procedure used to remove extra skin under the arms is called brachioplasty or arm lift.

Arm Lift

Brachioplasty General Information: Brachioplasty is a procedure to remove excess skin and fat from the arms of individuals in who wish to correct this aesthetic deformity. Candidates for brachioplasty are usually those who have had extreme weight gains and losses or have developed laxity due to age. The brachioplasty removes lax skin and fat and places the scars in locations that can be hidden within the armpit and under side of the arms. Like any surgical procedure there are risks and benefits that will be discussed at your consultation.

Length of Surgery: 2 to 4 Hours

Location: Accredited Surgery Center or Hospital

Anesthesia: General

Recovery Time: The patient can usually return to work in 1 to 2 weeks depending on the individual. Exercise and strenuous activity may be done at 4 to 6 weeks following surgery.
Post Operative Results: Each patient heals differently; however following the surgery patients may experience temporary pain, swelling, possible bruising, soreness and fatigue. The incisions may be pink at first but usually fade and flatten with time. It has been our experience that patients are very happy with their post op results and the removal of what some patients refer to as their,”wings”.

Helpful Surgery Hints: Be in good mental and physical health. Help improve healing by taking pre and postoperative vitamins. Maintain a healthy diet, exercise regularly and do not smoke.
