Procedures - Abdomen

Abdomen

Abdomen – Both men and women store extra fat under the skin and abdominal wall. Consequently, both are affected after major weight loss causing the appearance of loose skin on the abdomen. In addition to being aesthetically unappealing, hanging skin along the lower part of the abdomen can cause a skin condition referred to as interiginous dermatitis. Because the skin under the extra fold of abdominal skin is moist it chafes and becomes red, irritated and painful. In some cases it may have an odor. In extreme cases the skin can bleed and also become infected. This area needs to be kept dry. In the case of a skin infection medical treatment including antibiotics may be necessary. A more permanent solution to hanging skin is a plastic surgery procedure called an abdominoplasty or tummy tuck. This procedure is designed to remove the extra skin and tighten loose muscles.

Abdominoplasty/Tummy Tuck

Cosmetic surgery after weight loss - Surgical Solutions For Weight Loss Patients

Abdominoplasty/ Tummy Tuck

General Abdominoplasty Information: The extra abdominal skin and fat can be surgically removed and the abdominal muscles can be tightened by the abdominoplasty procedure. Generally in major weight loss patients the circumferential abdominoplasty is recommended to address the excess skin that extends around to the back. If a standard abdominoplasty is performed the patient may be left with what is referred to as, “dog ears” which are basically extra skin at the sides of the waist. The tummy tuck surgery can be performed by using a variety of incisions depending on each patient’s surgical needs. Generally the incisions are placed in areas that can be hidden by undergarments and clothes. At your consultation, Dr. Corbin will evaluate your needs and discuss your personal surgical plan to give you the best overall result. Like all operations there are surgical risks associated with the abdominoplasty and these will also be thoroughly discussed.

General Abdominoplasty Information

Length of Surgery: 2 to 5 Hours

Location: Accredited Surgery Center or Hospital

Anesthesia: General

Abdominoplasty Recovery Time: The patient can usually return to work in 2 to 3 weeks depending on the individual. Exercise and strenuous activity may be done at 4 to 6 weeks following surgery.

Abdominoplasty Post Operative Results: Each patient heals differently; however following the tummy tuck, surgery patients may experience temporary pain, swelling, possible bruising, soreness and fatigue. Over time the incisions will fade and flatten becoming less visible. It has been our experience that patients are very happy with their post op results and their new look following a tummy tuck.

Helpful Surgery Hints: Be in good mental and physical health. Any herbal medications must be stopped 2 weeks prior to surgery. Discontinue any use of Aspirin and anti- inflammatory drugs two weeks before surgery. Maintain a healthy diet, exercise regularly and do not smoke. Female patients taking birth control pills must stop taking the pills one month prior to surgery and one month after surgery. Help improve post operative healing by taking our surgical pre and postoperative vitamins.
